Senegalese Opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko, was sentenced to two years for “corrupting the youth,” and many Senegalese people have viewed this as a way to restrict him from challenging President Macky Sall in the 2024 election. This sentence has caused numerous outbreaks of riots, sadly leading to 15 deaths and potentially counting. Locals in the city of Dakar are attempting to shield themselves from the chaos outside.
We continue to pray for our friends in Senegal, hoping that this violence is close to an end.

“One of my most memorable moments from Senegal was spending time in the classroom with our buddies. My buddy, Oumy, and I were sitting in the back of the classroom listening to lessons when Mr. Seck asked if any students wanted to come up and teach. My buddy immediately volunteered me to go up to the front. After reading with my buddy, I realized one of the hardest things to teach were the different “c” sounds in English. After I explained this in English, Mr. Seck spoke to the students in Wolof and explained the lesson. Seeing the genuine interest and respect that the students had for Mr. Seck was my most memorable moment because it truly made me see the difference Mr. Seck and the club are making. I’ll never forget spending time in Lambaye with my buddy and the relationships formed between MHS students and Lambaye students. “ -Kate Boswell, February 2023 Trip to Senegal

“Throughout the entirety of the trip I found it hard to communicate with the people that I had met in the village. I had tried to communicate through broken English and Spanish, hand motions and through friends that spoke the language. Despite this, during the time I spent in the learning center I found a much different way to communicate. My friend, Senaboyu, showed me her favorite songs one day when we were on the community stage in the learning center. We used music to communicate with each other because that seemed to be the only “language” that we both spoke. Eventually those around us, playing soccer or just talking in groups, joined us in a circle to dance and sing. I was able to share a memory of laughter and emotion with the students in the center that day without using a single word. I was able to learn more about Senaboyu’s and her friend’s personality through that experience than I would’ve trying to speak with and I was able to communicate with so many more people because of it. From that moment, I realized the community that the center was making for the students and the village and how it was a place where people of all ages were able to work and be together.” -Shannon Gallaher February 2023 Trip to Senegal.
